The New Jersey Devils were already banged up coming into their opening round playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes and unfortunately things may have gotten much worse in Game 1 of that series.

Roughly midway through the second period, Devils defenseman Brenden Dillon would go down in front of the the Devils net and remain there for several seconds. Eventually the officials would call a stop to the play but Dillon remained there on the ice, clearly unable to rise to his feet under his own power.

It wasn't until the replay that it became clear what had happened to Dillon, with a battle in front of the net with Hurricanes forward William Carrier turning catastrophic for the Devils.

There seemed to be no ill intent on the part of Carrier but Dillon would go down awkwardly onto the ice and the two men became entangled in front of the Devils' net. Dillon initially laid on the ice before trying to get up, but quickly fell back to the ice indicating that something was very wrong.

Dillon was never able to get back up under his own power despite remaining on the ice for an extended period of time, with several teammates eventually carrying him back to the Devils bench and back down the tunnel.

This one didn't look good, especially not when you consider the Devils are now down to just 5 defensemen in this game. You can see a replay of it all in the video below:
