It took some last minute magic, but the defending gold medalists pulled it out.

You can breathe now, USA hockey fans. Team USA managed to eke out a 5-4 victory over Finland this afternoon, despite giving up a 3-0 lead and 4-2 lead. The Americans took the lead back in the final 2 minutes thanks to an Adam Fox breakaway goal set up by Buffalo Sabres prospect Casey Mittelstadt.
The play capped off a WILD third period in which it looked like the defending gold medalist may drop the game to the Finns and fall to 4th in tournament standings. As it is, the Americans will finish 2nd in their group behind Canada. That means that if we’re going to see another Canada vs USA game, it’ll be in the gold medal game.
The Americans will likely take on the Czechs or Russians in their next game. Canada will take on Switzerland as they head to the medal rounds.
