Brady Tkachuk: Gordie Howe hat trick and game winner.
The Senators captain puts his team on his back.
In a sport like hockey, and especially at the upper echelons like the National Hockey League, every win is going to come as a result of a team-wide effort. On Friday night however, the Ottawa Senators were probably a little extra thankful for their captain, Brady Tkachuk.
Tkachuk took over a game between the Senators and the New York Rangers in the late stages of the game, using both his skill as a forward and his physical strength to largely will his team to victory.
Tkachuk would step up the physicality in the final 5 minutes of the game's second period, engaging in a terrific tilt with a fellow captain in Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba.
The Rangers would be the first to respond with a goal in the third period, but with the game seemingly slipping away Tkachuk would step up in the final minute and force overtime with a game-tying goal. After battling Jacob Trouba in the second period and picking up an assist on the Senators' first goal of the night, Tkachuk cemented the Gordie Howe hat trick on the night.
Tkachuk wasn't done there however, he would also put the game away for the Senators in overtime with the game winning goal.
As I said though every win comes as the result of a team effort and the captain of the Ottawa Senators proved that once again following the conclusion of the game. When asked about his near heroic performance in Friday night's game, Tkachuk made sure to spread the love to his teammates making his first comments about the group effort that led to the win.
"It's definitely going to be memorable but I think everybody stepped up in here tonight," said Tkachuk following the game.
Not too shabby for the 300th game of Brady Tkachuk's young NHL career. For his full thoughts on the events of last night's game you can hear his post game comments in the short clip below.
