Auston Matthews reveals true feelings of beating Alex Ovechkin's goal record

Move over Alexander Ovechkin, because there's a new record goal scorer in town.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews tallied his 66th goal of the season last night, overtaking Ovechkin's mark of 65 set in the 2007-08 season. Matthews now has scored the most goals in an NHL season since the legendary Mario Lemieux scored 69 (nice) goals in the 1995-96 season, one year before his first retirement. 

And naturally, Matthews was informed of the stat afterward. 

"It's cool," Matthews said. "He's obviously who he is and what he's done for the game, and obviously what he's accomplished. So it's a big honor just to be in the same sentence."

Right now, with only a handful of games left on Toronto's schedule before the postseason begins, the 70-goal watch is now officially on. But is Matthews thinking about it? 

"I find when you really, I don't know, maybe overthink it and kind of almost want it too much, it almost doesn't go your way," Matthews said. "So I just try to approach every game the same. And obviously, we're winding down here the last couple of games, and just want to make sure myself individually and as a team, we're doing the right things night in, night out on both sides of the puck that is gonna translate here in the postseason. 

"So that's really the mindset going in night in, night out."

The Leafs have four games left on their schedule before the playoffs, which they've guaranteed themselves a berth in, start later this month.
