Last month, The Grind Line Podcast discussed the possibility of the Detroit Red Wings looking up north toToronto for an added boost up front if the Maple Leafs are indeed looking to dismantle the Core Four and move one of its prized pieces in Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander. The podcast got some heat when it suggested that Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman could get in touch with the new general manager in Toronto, Brad Treliving, and could offer top young defenseman Moritz Seider.

However, now another reported from Detroit is reporting that the proposed trade could be one that Yzerman considers… According to reporter Ansar Khan, there could be a look into the possibility of moving Seider for some added offense in Hockey Town in an All-Star caliber forward. Khan does not believe Detroit will find what it needs on the free agent market, and then attacks the idea of trading with the Maple Leafs and acquire part of their Core Four.

To be honest and Khan agrees, if Treliving says he’ll consider moving Matthews for Seider, you have to think about pulling that trigger especially if the Leafs’ superstar signs to stay.

“Toronto surely would ask for Moritz Seider as a starting point in any talks with the Red Wings. Detroit probably would be willing to package a number of players, prospects and picks that doesn’t include Seider to get Matthews, provided they can lock him up to an extension. But why would he sign an extension with the Red Wings when free agency is near?”

But Khan believes Nylander is the more plausible option, but now, do you offer up Seider for the Finn? Khan believes the Maple Leafs will ask for him and that will be Yzerman’s decision to see what he wants for his club…

Certainly, Yzerman will have to think twice before going down this road to boost his roster up front… Seider won the Calder Trophy, awarded to the rookie of the year in the NHL in 2021-2022. The 22-year-old put up 42 points in 82 games last season and has become a face of the franchise since his selection at the Draft.

As for Nylander, he posted 40 goals and 47 assists for 87 points in a full season as well. He gets paid $7 million next year before being eligible for unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2024.

These rumours keep buzzing and I’m guessing will do so until we know what happens with the Core Four in Toronto.
