Earlier this summer, it was revealed that former NHL forward Mike Ribeiro was charged with two counts of sexual assault with the charges being filed in Franklin County, Texas.
This prompted his former club in the QMJHL, the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, to take down Ribeiro’s number 9 banner, which had been hoisted in the heights of the Glencore arena. Ribeiro was the first player in team history to receive such an honor.
The operational director of the Huskies Gilles Bérubé confirmed to ICI Abitibi-Témiscamingue that the banner of the former star will be taken down before the start of the season.
“We wanted to be sure not to have to remove it in the middle of the season. It is as a preventive measure, so if there is no follow-up to this, we hope to put the banner back as soon as possible, ”he said (translated from French from the ICI interview), awaiting developments on the case.
Ribeiro allegedly sexually assaulted two women back on June 23rd, 2021, using his finger in his assault of one woman and his “sexual organ” on the other as reports stated to the Dallas Morning News. He was reportedly arrested on April 28, 2022, and released on bond set at $200,000. This is not the first time that Ribeiro has faced accusations of sexual assault. In 2015, Ribeiro was sued along with his wife for sexually assaulting the couple’s then-nanny…
Ribeiro played two seasons with Rouyn-Noranda, putting up 125 and 167 points in the regular season, before he was traded to the Quebec Remparts during his last season in the league.
After collecting 45 points in 21 games in Quebec, the center player was recalled by the Montreal Canadiens and went up to play 1074 games with different clubs, the Habs, Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals, Coyotes and Nashville Predators, for a total of 17 years in the NHL.
