Alex Ovechkin suffers injury during game back home in Russia
Concern in Washington:
Alex Ovechkin is getting back into shape ahead of the 2024-25 season, however, a worrisome update has come in from Russia about the Washington Capitals’ captain.
Ovechkin was playing a hockey game back home in Russia when he had to be taken out after sustaining a knee injury. The injury took place during an all-star game between the best Russian players of the NHL against those of the KHL, and had him miss out Sergei Mozyakin’s farewell match.
Despite being named the game’s best player, Ovechkin however was hurt and left in pain on the ice. Early reports suggest that Ovechkin’s knee injury is not serious enough to prevent him from starting the 2024-25 NHL in Washington on time comes October, per Russian Machine Never Breaks.
“This injury is not too serious and did not prevent Ovechkin from playing in the Game of the Year a week ago,” said a source from Match TV.
“But now Alexander has decided to take care of himself so that he can begin full training in 10 days.”
Ovi was supposed to attend and play in a farewell game for KHL legend Mozyakin in Magnitogorsk but held himself out. The contest took place without the Caps’ captain, but featured other NHL talents like Evgeni Malkin, Evgenii Dadonov, Viktor Kozlov, and Alexei Morozov.
Later on August 10, Ovechkin is set to play in another friendly in Russia tat the “Ovi Cup” in Moscow on August 10 and is expected to captain his side against a team led by Vyacheslav Fetisov.
Ovechkin scored just eight goals in his first 43 games, but finally came back a new man after the All-Star Break in February, adding 23 more tallies. He has two years left on a five-year deal he signed with the Caps in the summer of 2021 and will now enter his 20th season in the NHL. He believes he will retire at the end of that deal.
