Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin made his presence felt at the 2023 NHL All-Star Game this past weekend, as he has done at almost every All-Star Game dating back to his rookie season in 2005.

This past weekend though Ovi made some off-handed comments that seemed to have ruffled the feathers of some hockey traditionalists. In discussing some potential rule changes to make the league a lot more modern and relatable to new fans, Ovechkin was asked about the infamous tinted visor that he sported in his rookie campaign.

Remember these?

The NHL outlawed the mirrored and tinted visor style in 2006 seemingly out of nowhere. If I recall correctly Ovechkin was the only player in the league who sported the look at the time so... what gives?

Well, Ovechkin himself copped to the fact today that then New Jersey Devils goaltender and future Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur complained to the league, which led to the NHL banning the visors.

From Ovechkin:

Honestly... shout out to Marty on this one.

While Ovi looked cool in the mirrored visor, I don't think I'd be a fan of having 10 terminator-style players out on the ice. I begrudgingly accept that all players have to wear a visor now, but at least you can make out a players' face. If everyone were sporting a tinted windshield on their face, I think a lot of the personality would be taken out of the game. Thoughts?
