A look back at 5 times Don Cherry roasted Ron Maclean.

Today, November the 11th of 2024, marks the 5 year anniversary of Canadian icon Don Cherry being fired from his position on Coach's Corner, a long running segment on Hockey Night in Canada. It was a position that he occupied for many years alongside co-host Ron MacLean, although there was no question that the flamboyant Cherry was the star of the show.

MacLean has maintained his role as a prominent figure on the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast and unfortunately has drawn much criticism in his new role. When he trends on social media, as he has this weekend, in tends to be for all of the wrong reasons, with many fans clearly feeling that he didn't do right by his long time friend when Cherry was fired.

Here are just a few recent examples from this weekend:

With Ron MacLean trending on social media due to the negative feedback from hockey fans and Don Cherry trending on Remembrance Day, as he often does, there seemed to me to be no better time to look back at 5 times Don Cherry gave his co-host a piece of his mind.

#1 Shut up!

Cherry wasn't always the most subtle when it came to expressing his displeasure with his co-host, including this incident when he flat out cut off MacLean before he could even speak. You can tell by the decor in the background that we are going way back in the time machine for this one.

#2 Dummy!

Bob Probert was a legendary enforcer in the National Hockey League and for many years he protected the stars on his team, including Steve Yzerman during their time together as members of the Detroit Red Wings. This was something that Cherry very much believed in and when MacLean tried to interrupt him he was roasted by his co-host for doing so... twice!

#3 The Death Stare.

Speaking of interruptions, there are a few from MacLean in this next clip and as we saw in the previous clip Cherry was not a fan of MacLean's interruptions. You can see Cherry get progressively more and more annoyed with MacLean until he finally gives him what I can only describe as a death stare at the end of the clip. I'm surprised MacLean made it out of this one alive.

#4 The Kookaloos.

Cherry wasn't a very big fan of MacLean's more left-leaning politics during their time together on Coach's Corner and was never afraid to give his co-host a good old fashioned ribbing about that when live on air. In this infamous clip Cherry decried MacLean and his "kookaloo" friends on the topic of climate change, wondering why he was feeling so cold during what was supposed to be a warming trend.

#5 The Pinkos.

If you were wondering about the word "pinko" that Cherry used in his last clip you have to wonder no longer. Don Cherry once showed up to a Toronto City Hall event, at the request of the newly elected mayor Rob Ford, sporting one of his most flamboyant suits ever, a bright pink get up ready to mock the pinkos once again. A pinko is a derogatory term for someone with left-leaning views and Cherry called them out when asked to say a few words during the event at City Hall. Not only did he express his disdain for the pinkos however, but he also used the opportunity to take a shot at MacLean even though his co-host wasn't even at the event.

Unfortunately we will never get another moment like this as the relationship between Cherry and MacLean appears to have been irreparably damaged, with a visibly emotional Cherry expressing that he doesn't think he will ever be able to forgive MacLean for what transpired 5 years ago today.
