The Vegas Golden Knights have gone from one of professional sports best feel-good type stories to a team known for shrewd moves that blow up in their faces over the course of their short five year history.

However, a series of short-sighted moves have turned what was once viewed as a scrappy group of misfits into arguably the NHL's top villains. And of course, that's why not many people were left feeling sorry for them after it was announced that goaltender Robin Lehner won't be playing this upcoming season after undergoing hip surgery. It's not like they had a Vezina Trophy winning goaltender on their roster in recent years or anything, right?

So, will Vegas plan on throwing 25 year old Logan Thompson to the wolves this year by making him their starter? Or should they look to once again acquire some veteran talent? Take a look at three realistic options that Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon should consider.

1. Semyon Varlamov

The veteran Russian netminder is entering the final season of the four year, $20 million deal he inked with the New York Islanders. He's enjoyed success with his current squad, helping them two straight seasons to within a game of advancing to the Stanley Cup Final.

2. James Reimer

Another popular veteran, Reimer is coming off his first full season with the San Jose Sharks; he also previously suited up for them as a backup after being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 2016 NHL Trade Deadline. He's also on an expiring contract and can become a free agent next summer.

3. Jake Allen

While Allen has been said not to officially be on the radar of Vegas, don't be surprised to see their hand forced in bringing aboard the serviceable man between the pipes who started most of last season on a poor Habs squad.
