3 on 3 hockey on the ballot for 2030 Winter Olympics!
The IIHF as submitted its proposal.
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has formally applied to include 3 on 3 hockey for the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to make a decision on the proposal by the end of 2025. The IOC included 3 on 3 men's and women's basketball at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics and is scheduled to be a full medal event in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
From CBC:
IIHF, which has spent years several years experimenting with 3-on-3 tournaments, says doing the same with hockey could allow up to 240 more players to be Olympians.
Having 3-on-3 hockey could provide a place for amateurs and other pros around the world with NHL players back in the Olympics after not participating in 2018 and '22.
Personally, I think it would be absolutely electric to see 3 on 3 Olympic hockey, but there are just so many logistics to sort out ahead of time. Who would play in the events? Would it be the same players competing in "regular" ice hockey? Would it be... like... B or C level players? While I like the idea, I'm not sure it's realistic.
Thoughts?
