Whopping asking price revealed for Maple Leafs to acquire Brayden Schenn
Do you pull the trigger if you’re GM Brad Treliving?
On Thursday, insider Darren Dreger reported that St. Louis Blues have made captain Brayden Schenn available on the trade market and the Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to inquire about a potential deal.
“Well some believe that there’s potential of Brayden Schenn being traded by the St. Louis Blues. He is their captain and he does have a full no-trade clause so it is a complicated process. The Blues are underachieving right now, so yes the top contenders… are interested and that would include the Toronto Maple Leafs.”
On Friday, Dreger revealed on TSN1050’s FirstUp how much it would cost the Maple Leafs and general manager Brad Treliving to acquire Schenn ahead of the trade deadline. And it comes at a pretty big cost:
“I won’t throw out names from Toronto’s standpoint because I don’t think they have the assets to approach that negotiation, but I would look at a top young prospect, maybe another top prospect from the AHL and a top draft pick.
“If I’m [GM Doug] Armstrong and you want to convince me to move my captain with a pretty good deal, you have to make it worth my while and that’s essentially what it might take.”
It was obviously that the Blues were going to ask for a significant return for Schenn. He is in year five of an eight year deal that pays him $6.5 million annually. Sure, he’s a good player but I can’t imagine why the Leafs would be interested in taking on that whopper of a contract.
Unfortunately for the Blues too, if they are hoping to move Schenn for a hefty return, the veteran forward is currently is in year five of an eight year deal that pays him $6.5 million annually. Sure, he’s a good player but I can’t imagine why the Leafs would be interested in taking on that whopper of a contract.
This is a trade that might not happen, Toronto or anywhere else.
