Wes McCauley slammed by fans from two teams on Saturday.

It seems everyone was furious with NHL referee Wes McCauley on Saturday afternoon.

Veteran National Hockey League referee Wes McCauley probably didn't have the best game of his life on Saturday, especially not if you listen to the opinions of both the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks fan bases.

The Canucks and Rangers clashed on Saturday afternoon but it wasn't long before some of the focus from fans shifted away from the teams on the ice and towards the National Hockey League's officiating crew for this particular game. That crew featured both NHL referee T. J. Luxmore as well as the aforementioned McCauley, although most of the vitriol from fans appeared to focus on McCauley himself.

Now criticism of officiating is nothing new but what made this situation notable was the fact that both the Canucks faithful and the Rangers faithful were furious with McCauley after this contest, and for a variety of different calls as well.

The one that seemed to generate the most ire from the Canucks side of things was a penalty called on Jake DeBrusk during a scrum in front of Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin. DeBrusk was surrounded by 3 Rangers on the play but walked away with a two minute minor for his trouble.

The call that seemed to generate by far the most outrage however was a high stick to the face of Rangers defenseman Will Borgen who appeared to be struck in the face right in plain view of the officials on the ice.

Here is a close up of that high stick:

As I mentioned fans were outraged with McCauley in particular, likely because he is more well known to hockey fans than Luxmore, with hundreds of comments on social media expressing their displeasure with the official. Interestingly enough many of the critics shared a common complaint, seeming to feel that McCauley was trying too hard to make the game about himself.

Do you agree with the criticism of the officiating performance in today's game? Or are fans being a little too hard on McCauley? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
