Wayne Gretzky raises eyebrows after revealing favorite NHL player
Did you expect this from The Great One?

He's the greatest NHL player of all time, and he also played in an era that featured some unbelievable talents on the ice in their primes.
Wayne Gretzky currently holds just about every NHL scoring record, though his goal scoring mark is in danger of being broken by Washington Capitals star captain Alexander Ovechkin in the near future. But for now, The Great One remains on top.
And while he's close with Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, apparently No. 97 is not Gretzky's current favorite NHL player. So, who holds that honor of being at the top of Gretzky's list? According to the man himself, it's none other than New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal.
"I'm truly amazed by what Mathew Barzal is doing; I've said it many times. I saw Messier, Lemieux, Lafleur, but this kid is special."
While Barzal has yet to match reaching the 82 point mark that he accomplished in his rookie season of 2017-18, he remains New York's most important offensive player. In 457 career NHL games, all spent with the Islanders, Barzal has scored 105 goals and 257 assists.
Does it surprise you that Barzal is Gretzky's current favorite player over the likes of McDavid or Leon Draisaitl, both of whom star for Gretzky's former franchise in the Oilers?
