He emerged as one of the most formidable and impactful defensemen in the National Hockey League, showcasing his prowess particularly during the historic 1997 Stanley Cup victory. His dominance was exemplified by an astounding plus-60 rating during Detroit's record-setting 1995-96 season. Renowned for his punishing body checks, he instilled fear in the hearts of opponents with his physical presence on the ice.
Tragically, less than a week after the ultimate triumph, his career came to an abrupt end and his life was forever altered in a limousine accident that left him critically injured alongside team trainer Sergei Mnatsakanov. Konstantinov sustained severe head injuries and paralysis as a result of the accident.
However, he's still able to take in the occasional game at Little Caesars Arena, much to the light of the home crowd. In fact, he recently celebrated his 57th birthday at a Red Wings game, and even hit the goal horn before the opening face-off:
