Utah’s Jack McBain receives death threats after injuring Alex Ovechkin
He faces more than just fans’ wrath for endangering Ovechkin’s hunt for all-time scoring record.
The unfortunate news was confirmed on Tuesday when the Washington Capitals announced that superstar Alex Ovechkin was listed as week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
Ovechkin was hurt early in the third period when he had a knee-on-knee collision with Utah’s Jack McBain. He had to be helped off the ice after the hit. The Caps’ captain had scored twice before the injury to give him a league-high 15 goals this season and bringing him within 26 goals of tying Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 career tallies.
When the announcement was made, fans were obviously disappointed with the injury that could take Ovechkin out for too long in order for him to beat the Great One’s record this season.
And of course, some fans took it to another level and started harassing McBain of social media for what he did to Ovechkin. McBain received death threats on his Instagram page after the injury to the Russian star player. That’s not right.
On the play, no penalty was called as the contact was deemed incidental.
Ovechkin’s teammate Tom Wilson made McBain answer for the play later in the period with a fight.
Let’s hope angry fans can calm down and leave McBain alone. These types of incidents unfortunately happen in a fast paced game like hockey. It’s a shame Ovechkin will be out for a few weeks during his chase for the record, but you just know that he will return and be ready to continue the hunt.
