Utah Hockey Club looking to trade former first round pick.
The Utah Hockey Club is looking to unload a former Arizona Coyotes first round draft selection.
The Utah Hockey Club may be looking to move on from a rather unfavorable bit of Arizona Coyotes history, at least according to Arizona Coyotes insider Craig Morgan.
Morgan, who has been on top of everything going on in Utah and Arizona since the sale was announced to the public, reported on Sunday that the Utah Hockey Club is seeking to move on from a former Coyotes first round pick. That former first round pick is the 11th overall selection in the 2019 National Hockey League Entry Draft, defenseman Victor Soderstrom.
Soderstrom's development trajectory hasn't been great with the 23 year old blue liner having just 53 National Hockey League games under his belt, only 3 of which came last season. Instead Soderstrom's last season was spent almost entirely in the American Hockey League where he appeared in 62 games for the Tucson Roadrunners, scoring 9 goals and adding 23 assists for a total of 32 points.
Soderstrom is coming off of his entry level contract, a 3 year deal that carried an average annual value and cap hit of $836,000 per season, and is currently a restricted free agent in need of a new deal. Any team looking to acquire him from Utah would likely want to discuss the potential structure of a new deal before pulling the trigger on a trade.
Morgan does report that Utah is not closed off to the possibility of re-singing Soderstrom to a new deal, but it seems the team has already begun to explore potential trade scenarios.
