Ultimate blow to Alex Chiasson who might have played his last NHL game...
The news came down in Detroit with just five days to go before the NHL’s roster cutdown day…
Alex Chiasson underwent hip surgery in January and missed a full season of hockey last year. He was hoping to reunite with the Detroit Red Wings and have the chance to crack the main roster when he signed a professional tryout agreement (PTO) last month.
However, his hopes died on Wednesday when the Red Wings announced, per insider Chris Johnston, that Chiasson has been released from his PTO contract.
Chiasson just turned 34 years old yesterday and has been working towards an NHL comeback, but will now have only five days to get a contract and a chance at a main roster in the league. Which seems unlikely…
The last time he played for Detroit, Chiasson had a good showing at the end of the 2022-23 season. He managed to post six goals and three assists while being a constant menace around the net on the power-play. Chiasson then turned down the Red Wings’ offer of a two-way contract in the summer of 2023 and attended the Boston Bruins’ training camp on a PTO, missing the cut at the end.
Now cut again from an NHL roster, Chiasson might have played his last NHL game, more than a year ago. During camp in Detroit earlier this week, Chiasson had spoken about this possibility to the media.
“I know my game, I know my role, how I can help a team,” he said. “I can help my linemates just go out and do what I do best and the rest, we’ll see where it goes.”
And for now, that’s out of the Red Wings’ roster, unfortunately. The NHL’s roster cutdown day is Monday, Oct. 7. Teams that need players to clear waivers before assigning them to the minors will have to proceed at the latest on Sunday, since the rest of the league can claim those players in a 24-hour period.
