The good news is that the Detroit Red Wings have been able to overcome lengthy absences from several key players this season to put together a strong 7-3-3 record through the first 13 games of the schedule. They've been without the likes of Tyler Bertuzzi (broken hand), Robby Fabbri (torn ACL), and Oskar Sundqvist (upper body injury) for several games, while Filip Zadina (broken foot) and Matt Luff are now expected to be out for multiple weeks. Meanwhile, Jakub Vrana continues his time in the NHLPA Player Assistance Program for an undisclosed issue.
The Red Wings could be getting a major boost following tonight's game at home against the New York Rangers as they prepare for a Western road swing with the anticipated return of Bertuzzi, who suffered a broken hand while blocking a shot in the second game of the year against the New Jersey Devils.
"I’m excited to come back," Bertuzzi said after this morning's skate. "The guys have been doing really well, gelling well together."
"I got surgery, I got a pin put in, so after a week, I was pretty good, I could pick her (8-month old daughter Kinsley) up and what not," Bertuzzi said.
"I broke my hand. It’s just one of those things you can’t control. It was a random shot and it got me in the right spot. It’s going to take me four weeks, probably, so not as bad as we anticipated."
Bertuzzi was one of Detroit's leading scorers last season with 30 goals, and will be relied upon to provide more offensive punch while the team awaits the returns of both Fabbri and Vrana to the lineup.
"I've been able to skate and stay in shape," Bertuzzi said. "Now it's just a matter of when I feel good enough to play and can step right back in. It’s good."
