Earlier today, former Edmonton Oilers goalie Mike Smith was trending when fans were demanding him to return to help out poor started Jack Campbell. Through 10 starts this season, Soup has put up a .873 save percentage and an abysmal 4.27 goals-against average, and is one player brutally blamed for the Oilers’ early struggles this season.
However, Edmonton media isn’t only going after Campbell. Mark Spector has also targeted forward Jesse Puljujarvi, who got the chance to shine on a line with captain Connor McDavid for the past three games, but still managed to record zero point.
Both Campbell and Puljujarvi are being called out on social media.
Last night during and after the humiliating 7-2 loss against the Carolina Hurricanes, Campbell finished the game with 25 saves and a .781 save percentage. You can’t blame fans for wanting to see how Campbell before last season. With the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2021-22, over his first 10 and the difference is striking — 2.16 GAA and .926 save percentage. He needs to start acting like a player who signed a five-year, $25 million contract!
As for Puljujarvi, he has just a goal and an assists in 15 contests. That’s just bad… Especially seeing that he and the Oilers avoided arbitration this summer, and agreed to a one-year contract worth $3 million.
“That’s $8 million in cap space, getting nothing done,” as Spector puts it.
