Two Canadian teams already in the mix to sign Brandon Saad!
He could be signed in the next few hours!
On Wednesday, the St. Louis Blues and veteran forward Brandon Saad mutually agreed to terminate his contract after he clears unconditional waivers later today. It has been reported that the Blues did attempt to find a trade partner for Saad but had no takers partly because of his contract. He had a year left on his deal with an average annual value of $4.5 million and a full no-trade clause this season. He was eventually placed on waivers, and cleared and was due to be assigned to their AHL affiliate in Springfield. But then came the mutual contract termination.
His championship experience with the Chicago Blackhawks, his newfound affordability and his even 20-plus goal seasons make him a tempting options for contenders out there.
Amongst them, two Canadian contenders will attempt to sign the unrestricted free agent. According to Blues insider Jeremy Rutherford of the Athletic, the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals and Dallas Stars will be strong suitors to get Saad’s services due to their needs for more forward depth.
Several insiders and pundits are liking Saad to the Oilers as well as the Maple Leafs, including Frank Seravalli of Daily Face-Off, who also lists the New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning as potential landing spots.
There is a link in Toronto for Saad as he’s played for Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube in St. Louis and could be an affordable addition to their forward lines.
We could find out as early as this afternoon where Saad signs and if he is moving to Canada.
