Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland made the call earlier this season to bring aboard controversial forward Evander Kane, who certainly is a gifted athlete on the ice but has had plenty of issues away from the rink.
His personal troubles aside, Kane has proven to be a valuable commodity for the Oilers, having scored 22 goals with 17 assists in the 42 games he's suited up in since joining the team. But is he in their long-term plans?
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, the Oilers will be trying "as hard as possible" to extend his contract. He also said the same about New York Rangers forward Andrew Copp, who was acquired from the Winnipeg Jets last month.
"Well I can tell you that both the New York Rangers and the Edmonton Oilers are going to try as hard as possible to extend the contracts of Andrew Copp and Evander Kane," Dreger said on Insider Trading. "Now, there’s no guarantee, of course. These guys are both pending top unrestricted free agents.
"In Andrew Copp, talk about a chemistry experiment that has been highly successful. Perfect fit with Artemi Panarin. And Evander Kane has been an excellent complement on the left side with Connor McDavid. But you do have to go through the negotiation.
"I’m told the New York Rangers are going to push hard – hard – to extend Andrew Copp, we can understand why. Likewise for Evander Kane and the Oilers. But you wonder about the term between Kane and the Oilers. Is three years too much? We’ll have to find out."
Of course, Holland has been notorious in recent years for handing out lengthy contracts to players who later don't live up anywhere near to the term and salary they were handed.
You can't say that Kane hasn't been an important member of the Oilers in the second half of the 2021-22 campaign, and don't be surprised to see him back with a multi-year deal.
