When the Winnipeg Jets traded forward Pierre-Luc Dubois to the Los Angeles Kings and bought out Blake Wheeler’s final year earlier this summer, all fans expected two more significant moves. The expectations were that the Jets would managed to trade goalie Connor Hellebuyck and star center Mark Scheifele, who are both slated to become UFAs next July.
But we are still waiting… With training camp a month away, Lyle Richardson of The Hockey News reports that “here’s no sign the Jets are any closer to moving either player.”
Last month, Scott Billeck of the Winnipeg Sun pointed out that the Jets were encoutering difficulty in their attempts to move Hellebuyck and Scheifele, notably due to their respective $6-million-plus cap hits and the constant issue of most NHL teams and the flattened salary cap.
“For now, it appears the Jets will head into the season with Hellebuyck unless a deal pops up that makes sense.
Ditto on Scheifele.”
That said, Billeck strongly believes that the Jets will be in a tough spot if both players remain on the roster and Winnipeg ends up in a playoff spot by the trade deadline. And he points to other risks:
“To spell out the risk: the Jets could potentially lose one or both for free, especially if either picks up an injury at an inopportune time.”
We can understand why nothing has happened in Winnipeg as far as monster trades for Hellebuyck and / or Scheifele.
Can the Jets find the perfect offer before the start of the campaign or will they bet on high risk, high reward during the season?
