Toronto's emergency goalie Jett Alexander tells the crazy story of how he got NHL call up last night

A great story. This kid seems so genuine.

In case you missed it last night, the Colorado Avalanche announced that starting goaltender Darcy Kuemper was not well enough to dress for his team's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs and that emergency backup goalie (EBUG) Jett Alexander of the University of Toronto would dress as the team's backup.

Jonas Johansson started the game, with Alexander backing him up on the bench until AHL goaltender Justus Annunen was able to make it to the game.

Check it out:

Well... spoiler alert but Annunen made it to the game without Alexander having to breaking a sweat really.

The 22 year old Alexander now has a story to tell for life though, even if it's not quite as good as David Ayres' legendary tale.

So... let's give the kid his moment in the big leagues, with a proper introduction:

Alexander is a former Junior A star with the OJHL's North York Rangers and actually set the league record for shutouts in 2018-19 with 10 clean sheets in 43 games. He concluded his junior career with the Prince George Spruce Kings of the BCHL in 2019-20 and has played just one game with the OUAA's University of Toronto this season.

His night last night consisted mostly of skating and stretching with the team during warmups and taking a few warmup shots from superstars like Nathan MacKinnon.

Here's a few more photos of the kid in warmup:

After the game Alexander met with The Athletic's Peter Baugh and shared some of the details of his day and how it all went down.

Quotes below from Alexander, taken from Baugh's article:

“(I) didn’t really know what was going on."

“Obviously growing up watching the Leafs, being a fan of the team and getting to be on the same ice as all these guys with how good both these teams are, it was kind of just surreal.”

“It’s crazy to see the difference in levels just going up. (I’m) playing university hockey in Canada now, and I’m looking at those guys just like ‘holy shit, they’re so good.'”

Earlier in the day Alexander was writing a biology paper for class... flash forward a few hours and he's taking the ice at Scotiabank Arena to face off against his hometown Leafs. A day that he'll remember forever.
