Today’s waivers get veteran bought out for the second time in NHL career!

This is a first in NHL history!

There were only two players linked to unconditional waivers on Friday, but both got a lot of people talking in the NHL.
Of course, the first was Alex Galchenyuk, whose contract was bought out by the Arizona Coyotes after he was placed on the waiver wire on Thursday. That’s because it was revealed that over the weekend, the newly signed forward was arrested on charges of private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest and threatening or intimidating.

In other waivers news on Friday came the announcement from the Philadelphia Flyers that defenseman Tony DeAngelo had been placed on unconditional waivers for purposes of a buyout.

Unfortunately for DeAngelo, he writes NHL history as the first player to be bought out twice in his NHL career. In the summer of 2021, the New York Rangers bought out the defenseman for one third of his salary. This came after a number of off-ice incidents involving the former first round pick pick, leading to the Rangers’ breaking point after DeAngelo was involved in an altercation with teammate Alexandar Georgiev outside the dressing room following an overtime loss earlier that year.

CapFriendly says the Flyers will buyout DeAngelo once he clears waivers, with a second buyout window having opened upon settling with Noah Cates ahead of arbitration this week.

If unclaimed and the Flyers buy him out, they will be left with a cap charge of $1.67 million for DeAngelo in each of the next two seasons, where he was scheduled to have a $5-million cap hit for the 2023-24 season.

I don’t know about you, but if I were DeAngelo, I would hate to be the first player in NHL history to get bought out twice.
