On this day, 1994: Mark Messier GUARANTEES that his New York Rangers will defeat the New Jersey Devils in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final, forcing a Game 7.
It's one of the most iconic moments in NHL history and maybe the most iconic moment in all of New York sports history. Not only did Messier guarantee victory for his team, but he went out and delivered. With the Rangers down 2-0, Messier sets up Alex Kovalev to start the rally. Then he goes on an absolute TEAR, scoring three unanswered goals to seal the deal.
The Rangers would go one to win Game 7 thanks to Stephane Matteau and would ultimately defeat the Vancouver Canucks in the Stanley Cup Final to deliver a championship for the Rangers, ending a 53 year drought.
