Broken hearts and… broken faces? The last minute of the final game of the World Juniors championship got intense as the United States had become the clear winners.
Team USA scored three times in the third period and beat host Sweden to win the World Juniors gold medal with a 6-2 victory Friday. While the Americans worked hard to outplay Swedish players, the victory will be tainted by this altercation at the very end of the game.
Things got nasty between the two teams as players started a scrum close to center ice with just 31 seconds left to the final frame.
Montreal Canadiens prospect and Team USA star player Lane Hutson even got into the mix, not backing down from a much bigger opponent in Anton Johansson who is 6’4, 196 lbs.
Let’s not forget that Hutson has been said to have to take on weight and size before his NHL debut as he stands just 5’10, 162 lbs.
This is what the fight looked like:
Isaac Howard scored twice, Gabe Perreault collected a goal and two assists, and there were tallies from Zeev Buium, Ryan Leonard and Rutger McGroarty to get the 6-2 victory. The club’s netminder Trey Augustine made 24 saves to pick up the victory in goal for the U.S.
The American team’s last triumph came in 2012 after topping the field in 1981. Sweden also settled for silver on home soil in 1993 and 2014. Team USA now owns 15 medals at the world juniors.
