The Vegas Golden Knights have just confirmed that captain Mark Stone underwent back surgery on Tuesday and is out indefinitely.

As insider Chris Johnston points out, “if he’s out for the rest of the regular season — which seems possible — the Golden Knights could open up considerable cap space by placing him on long-term injured reserve.”

It was reported in January that Stone was believed to have suffered a similar back injury to the one that limited him to just 37 games last season.

While this is a huge loss for the Golden Knights, they could now have $9+ million dollars in LTIR space to play with. They are strong contenders to attract big names ahead of the March 3rd deadline.

Stone ranks second on the Golden Knights’ roster in goals (17) and points (38). While Vegas can use $9+ million dollars in LTIR space around the deadline, how can the team replace a player and leader like Stone?

All eyes turned on what the Golden Knights plan on doing next as Stone begins recovery.
