Terrifying scene in Sweden after former NHLer suffers accidental skate cut to his face
I hate to bring it up, but this is eerily reminiscent of the Adam Johnson incident in 2023.
An absolutely horrific scene played out in Sweden this past weekend in a game between Rogle BK and Brynas IF.
Former Vancouver Canucks forward Anton Rodin, now a member of Brynas, accidentally clipped Rogle forward and Anaheim Ducks draft pick Albin Sundsvik with his skate after being tripped to the ice while making a drive for the net.
Rodin's skate essentially slash Sundsvik in the cheek, causing him to bleed profusely on the ice. The play was blown dead immediately and medical staff rushed to Sundsvik's need. He was rushed to a local hospital and the team has announced that he will be okay and make a full recovery.
Here's the play (graphic content):
Sundvsik spoke to reporters earlier this week after being released from the hospital:
"Blood started coming out pretty much right away. Then I put my hands against it. I felt that it was on the cheek but that the wound was quite deep. But also that it was not against the eyes or the mouth and that it was not on the neck. It went pretty fast."
"I don't really know what happened, it is what it is. Maybe they didn't see the blood or thought I got a stick in the face. It's scary - if it had been a few centimeters in any other place, it would have been important seconds."
- Albin Sundsvik
Like he says, if that had happened just a few centimeters in another direction and we may be having an entirely different reaction to what happened.
In any case this, along with the horrific death of Nottingham Panthers (UK) forward Adam Johnson in 2023 should lead to more discussion about mandatory neck guards in professional hockey.
