Last week, forward Vladimir Tarasenko was taken off the free-agent market when he signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Ottawa Senators. While he took less money and term than first expected when he landed on free agency, Tarasenko is now in a good position to be able to fill the void left up front following the Alex DeBrincat trade out to the Detroit Red Wings.
However, the Russian forward is up to a rough start with the local media. On Tuesday when he first met with reporters in his press conference as a new member of the Senators, Tarasenko gave a terrible first impression when he snapped: “I think I’m answering the same question for the third time right now.”
Tarasenko better get used to playing in a busy Canadian market where media is as passionate as the fans in the stands.
With a short term deal, Tarasenko got what he wanted. While he was seeking more money as a coveted free agent, he did manage to get the short one-year deal in order to set himself up for a major payday next summer, once he returns to free agency next summer.
Unless this gets better, this first interaction with media could be added to his list of cons for staying in Ottawa…
