The selection for a number one goalie Team North America's under 23 team may have seemed like a matter of formality for most and it appears it may very well have been in the end.
According to a report from the Associated Press' Stephen Whyno the specially formed squad for this World Cup of Hockey tournament will be backstopped by Stanley Cup Champion Matt Murray. While it was fair to question his sample size, after all he has played just 16 career games in the National Hockey League's regular season, general manager Peter Chiarelli clearly felt his Stanley Cup run could not be ignored.
"Just based on his body of work, what he’s done, you can’t ignore that. He’s the lead dog right now."
Murray has some solid backups with both Connor Hellebyuck and John Gibson, but it will likely take a stumbled from Murray for him to lose the starting job.
