Sudden trade rumours unfold around Evander Kane in Edmonton...

In early 2022, Evander Kane arrived in Edmonton with a dark cloud to shake off as a new member of the Oilers as he dealt with numerous allegations of his conflicts with teammates, creditors, girlfriends and an ex-wife. Right away though, he impressed his new teammates and fans, putting up 22 goals in 43 regular season games on the wing with Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl. He added 13 goals in 15 games of the 2022 postseason, and we all knew he was there to stay, signing a new year four year deal at $5.1 million per.

Then in 2022-23, Kane battled a scary injury when he sustained a slit wrist in November. Allan Mitchell took another look at Kane’s absence now that a significant change has come to the front office with Jeff Jackson becoming CEO of hockey operations. Mitchell believes GM Ken Holland missed a huge opportunity to boost his roster when Kane went missing and cannot afford to do the same thing this upcoming season if Kane, or another top forward like him, gets injured early on.

Kane was injured in November and Mitchell did not agree with the Oilers not looking for help right then and there:

“Edmonton fell short of winning the division and was forced to take a more difficult route in the first round of the postseason. It cost them in the series versus the Vegas Golden Knights.”

When addressing Kane straight on, Micthell writes:

“Kane is a good bet to outperform his production from a year ago (16 goals and 28 points in 41 games), but his injuries were serious and he’s the only true power forward on the roster. If his mediocre numbers posted after his return from injury continue, Edmonton will have a dilemma.”

The Oilers need to be a contender all season long, and therefore we could see more moves this season than any other. Edmonton is going all-in in 2024 and this could mean trades at any point until the deadline.

During the playoff series against the Golden Knights, Kane went viral when he told forward Keegan Kolesar “When you f*ck around, sometimes you got to find out.”

It feels like there is no more f***ing around in Edmonton when it comes to winning the Stanley Cup.
