Successful trade for Jacob Trouba will get done after failed attempt this summer

The Rangers tried almost everything this summer to trade their captain, however, it seems inevitable that the defenseman will be gone from NYC after this season.

The New York Rangers entered the 2024-25 season with captain Jacob Trouba on board after rumours of a failed trade in the summer. The star defenseman claimed there was no animosity and that he was focused on winning in NYC, however, there could be some resentment with a report from The Athletic’s Arthur Staples.

It all started when the Blue Shirts reportedly attempted to flip Trouba in a deal that was said to be sending him to the Detroit Red Wings, however, the blue liner owns a 15-team no-trade clause and allegedly blocked the move.

But the clause will change again this summer and Staples believes general manager Chris Drury will look to move Trouba again and get it done. Trouba still has the 15-team clause for this season, but it turns into a 12-team no-trade clause effective next July 1 for the final season of his contract. That convinced Staples that Drury will shop the veteran blue liner next summer.

“The brief, futile attempt to get him to waive his no-trade clause and leave this past offseason was a bit ill-advised, but Trouba and his camp seem to understand that this is going to happen next summer with or without their input.”

With Trouba gone, the Rangers would free up space to sign multiple free agents, including star goalie Igor Shesterkin and his backup Jonathan Quick, /defensemen K’Andre Miller and Ryan Lindgren, and forwards Reilly Smith, Kaapo Kakko and Will Cuylle. Drury can’t afford them all, but if he moves Trouba, he could get enough room for the most important players to keep in the Big Apple.

At the start of the season, Trouba had mentioned how he believed this “would be the last crack for this core”. Chances are it is, especially with the high expectations that Trouba will be gone in a successful trade, this tune around.
