Steve Yzerman explains why no major moves were made

While the Detroit Red Wings didn’t make any major additions at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, one major indicator of their improvement was the fact that they were not sellers for the first time in several seasons.

Detroit did make a move earlier today, sending little-used tough forward Klim Kostin to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Radim Simek and a seventh-round pick (originally New Jersey's pick) in the 2024 NHL Draft.

And as Yzerman said, part of the reason why he wasn’t overly active was the high price that he was asked of other general managers to add pieces, along with his team’s vastly improved depth.

”Part of why we weren’t very active at the deadline this year is we like the depth we have in the organization,” he said. “Giving up this year a 1st, 2nd or 3rd round pick for depth, we’re better off bringing up our guys from Grand Rapids for that."

”We’re not one of those top, top teams that’s willing to give up first round picks and top prospects to get in on some of those rental players," he continued. 

In the meantime, look for the likes of Jonatan Berggren and Simon Edvinsson to earn call ups from the AHL in short order.
