The Seattle Kraken has a tough decision to make when it comes to young prospect Shane Wright this season. Indeed, if he is not on the starting roster on opening night in October, Wright will have to report to the junior ranks in order to continue his development.
However, as Glenn Dreyfuss of The Hockey News reports, Kraken general manager Ron Francis could request an special permission for its 2022 first round draft choice so that he can play in the American Hockey League instead of the OHL if he is not able to crack the roster at the start of the season.
“The Kraken are granted an exception to the NHL-OHL transfer agreement, allowing Wright to begin the season at AHL Coachella Valley.”
This is what Francis said of Wright on The Athletic Podcast:
“So it’s a process. Everybody takes sort of a different path. We’ve had numerous conversations at all points with Shane and his agent and his family, making sure that they understand why we’re doing certain things.”
It may be the right call if the Kraken is granted the special exception as Wright saw a beautiful progression during his time with the Firebirds in last season’s playoffs.
Let’s see if Seattle can make the best call on Wright for his future with the team and his professional development.
