William Nylander is one of the biggest stars in the NHL entering the upcoming season on the last year of his contract and the lack of developments in his negotiations has only prompted more and more trade rumours. However, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman made a bold assessment on the situation in his latest 32 Thoughts column, stating that Nylander will play the 2023-24 season as a Maple Leafs with or without a deal in place.

The insider also claims that a significant change could be coming to Nylander on the Maple Leafs’ roster.

“I think William Nylander plays this season as a Toronto Maple Leaf, unsigned or not. (And it doesn’t sound like there’ve been any recent discussions.) I also believe the team will consider deploying him at centre from time to time. It’s been discussed.”

This could also increase Nylander’s value on the trade market if he can play center and wing.

On Tuesday night, Chris Johnston also reported on Insider Trading on TSN that some progress has been made towards an extension for Nylander, but fans shouldn’t get too excited.

“Now I don’t know that there’s anything bad to be read into there – it seems like both sides are approaching this with a bit of caution. No plans at this point that I can glean for them to pick up those talks, but there is some hope with Nylander coming back to North America, being here physically, face-to-face conversations might propel things forwards.”

On Wednesday morning at the opening of training camp, head coach Sheldon Keefe basically confirmed Friedman's reports, stating that Nylander will "start at centre at camp tomorrow."
