Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby still cannot negotiate an extension at the moment, but he will be able to as soon as the next NHL season calendar gets underway on July 1, 2024. Until then, there will be lots of chatter on his future with the team, which his agent Pat Brisson addressed to Rob Rossi of the Athletic on Wednesday.

The agent did more than that, basically revealing his client’s desire ahead of negotiations. Brisson said, “Sidney is hockey’s Tom Brady.” Meaning that Crosby is reiterating his desire to play only for the Penguins.

Rossi points out that “Next summer, Crosby will want a long-term commitment from the Penguins,” adding how the captain is likely to take a hometown discount to make it happen. On top of that however, Rossi believes that Crosby will make sure the Penguins avoid a full rebuild while he remains on the roster, in route for another championship before he can call it a career.

Recent reports emerged from Dave Molinari of Pittsburgh Hockey Now that Crosby could ask for a permutation of «87» in the deal.

“While precisely how many seasons Crosby’s next contract will cover is hard to say, there’s not much mystery about the money that will be involved. It’s pretty much a lock to be based on some permutation of «87,» whether it’s the third in a series of contracts with an $8.7 million salary-cap hit, a deal that pays him $87 an hour or one that’s worth 87 cents per second.”

We don’t know what Crosby’s next contract will look like, it feels almost guaranteed that it will have 87 involved in the numbers. And Brisson said it how his client will look to stay long-term with the club that selected him first overall in the 2005 NHL Draft.
