Sidney Crosby gets booed louder than ever before during Alex Ovechkin’s ceremony
Even on a special occasion, the Penguins’ captain gets no love in Washington. Watch below:
On Thursday evening, the Washington Capitals held a pre-game ceremony to honor Alex Ovechkin and his passing of Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s all-time goal scorer.
The ceremony featured a video tribute and plenty of gifts for Ovi and his family, but also video messages and tributes from other players around the NHL. One of them was Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who’s also been a pain in the ass of the Capitals for years whenever the two rivals face off on the ice. As soon as Crosby’s face appears on the jumbotron and he started speaking, congratulating Ovechkin on his impressive accomplishment, fans in Washington did not want to hear it. They booed mercilessly the Penguins’ superstar during the ceremony to celebrate their own captain.
That’s part of the game, right? I’m sure Ovechkin found it funny and was visibly moved by the tributes he received ahead of the game against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes.
The Capitals rolled out the red carpet for Ovechkin’s wife Nastya and his mother Tatyana, who both received giant bouquets of roses and pricy Rolex watches. Ovechkin himself received a golden hockey stick and a remarkable concrete sculpture celebrating his 895 goals, featuring a game-used stick and a real pair of his yellow laced skates.
