Sidney Crosby drafted 1st overall by the Penguins
Well… that worked out pretty well, I’d say.

July 30th, 2005: After winning a historic lottery that saw each of the NHL’s 30 teams get a shot at drafting first overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins selected center Sidney Crosby of the QMJHL’’s Rimouski Oceanic.
Just four years later Crosby would go on to become the youngest captain in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup. Of course, he’d add two more Stanley Cups to his resume with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017, capturing the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in both campaigns, as well.
There’s no doubt that Crosby has had a legendary, Hall of Famer worthy career in Pittsburgh thus far, but it all began on this historic day in 2005 when he officially became a Penguin.
