Sidney Crosby breaks one of Mario Lemieux's records.

The captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins surpasses Penguins legend Mario Lemieux in the record books.

Sidney Crosby has cemented his place in Pittsburgh Penguins history, surpassing a truly legendary figure within that franchise on Saturday night.

Crosby and the Penguins clashed with the New York Islanders on Saturday night and it would be during that game's first period that Crosby would overtake Penguins' Mario Lemieux for the all time assists lead in Penguins history. Crosby battled for the puck during a Penguins power play with that puck eventually making its way to Penguins forward Michael Bunting, who would make no mistake and find the back of the net to tie the game at one goal a piece.

That assist was the 1034th of Crosby's career in the National Hockey League, all of which have come as a member of the Penguins, good enough to put him 1 over Lemieux who had 1033 assists during his own NHL career which was also spent entirely with the Penguins.

Crosby is also rapidly closing in on Lemieux's(690) goal total with the Penguins with Crosby(602) just 82 goals behind Lemieux at this point in the regular season. There's effectively no chance that Crosby will catch Lemieux this season but it could very well happen before Crosby finally does decide to hang up his skates for good.

Of course I would be remiss if I did not point out that Crosby has taken much longer to get there, with Crosby playing in his 1309th career game tonight while Lemieux only played in 905 games during his NHL career. Lemieux was of course severely limited by injures as well as Hodgkin's lymphoma which forced him to step away from the sport for a period of time.

Do you think Crosby will catch Lemieux's goal total before his career is over? And if so when do you think he will surpass #66 in that regard? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
