Sheldon Keefe throws Ilya Samsonov and Brad Treliving under the bus.

The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered an ugly loss at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night, a loss that once again had many asking serious questions about the current state of the Maple Leafs goaltending situation.

There were a number of things that you can point to as factors that contributed to the loss but the elephant in the room was once again the terrible performance of goaltender Ilya Samosnov. Expected to be the Maple Leafs number one goaltender coming into the season, Samsonov once again dropped the ball when he allowed 6 goals on just 21 shots against for a save percentage of .714 on the night.

Following the game, even head coach Sheldon Keefe couldn't help but point to the goaltending as a major source of problems for the Maple Leafs at the moment.

"Mistakes get magnified when you don't get saves," said the Maple Leafs bench boss.

It wasn't just Samsonov that Keefe called out following the game either. The Maple Leafs have thus far refused to make any significant changes in goal with Joseph Woll currently sidelined due to injury (high ankle sprain) and only Samsonov and veteran Martin Jones currently available for Keefe to deploy, and following the loss Keefe appeared to implore Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving to remedy that situation.

"It's the NHL, we need saves, we need points and we need wins. So I’m sure (GM Brad Treliving) is going to consider everything," said Keefe.

Samsonov currently boasts a 3.94 goals against average and a .862 save percentage on the season and perhaps most damning of all is the fact that his teammates are not playing with confidence in front of him. Given those circumstances, you can hardly blame a frustrated Sheldon Keefe for wanting a change to be made.
