Sheldon Keefe buries his own player in front of the media before storming out of his press conference.
You don't see something like this every day.
On Saturday night the New Jersey Devils suffered a tough loss to the Ottawa Senators in what was a very close game, the second loss in a row for the Devils and their 6th such loss over their last 10 games. It has been tough for the Devils down the stretch with serious injuries, most notably to that of star forward Jack Hughes, having a profound impact on their season and it seems like things finally came to a boiling point following that loss to the Sens.
During his post game press conference, Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe would bury one of his own players in a manner that I'm not sure I've seen him do before, cutting off a reporter's question to do so. Keefe was being asked about comments made to the media by Devils defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic, when Keefe suddenly cut the question off as if to suggest that Kovacevic should be the last player making those comments.
"Kovacevic just needs to play better," said a frustrated Keefe. "That would help."
Keefe was nodding his head as he looked around the room after making his comments, as if to make sure the message got across to every single media member in that room. Following his harsh comments about his own player, Keefe didn't field any additional questions and simply walked away from the podium and stormed out of the press conference.
You can see the surreal moment for yourself in the short clip linked below:
Part of me finds it hilarious to think about the possibility that Keefe might have been storming off to go find Kovacevic in order to give him a piece of his mind.
It remains to be seen how Kovacevic will respond to being called out in such a public fashion by his head coach.
