Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones left practice early and in visible pain on Wednesday morning as reporters present witness him taking a shot directly to the neck area during the morning skate.

According to team insider Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times, Jones headed straight to the dressing room as a shot deflected and ended up catching him high right in the neck. Pope also wonders if the puck could have caught his collarbone.

The Blackhawks are just 15-37-3 on the season as they begin the rebuilding process led by the recently returned rookie Connor Bedard. Sure, they are out of the playoff hunt, but are still looking to build some momentum in their rebuild.

Also, Chicago is already without some key players due to injury, most notably forward Luke Murphy, blue liner Connor Murphy, and defenseman Nikita Zaitsev are out.

What a blow it would be if Jones is added to that list. An update is expected to be provided later on, possibly right before puck drop against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers later tonight.

Jones has been one of the franchise’s leaders with veteran forward Nick Foligno and losing him would be tough for the remainder of the schedule.

We should know more shortly.

UPDATE: After practice, head coach Luke Richardson stated that Jones is fine after taking a puck to the neck and that it will not prevent him from playing tonight against the Flyers. There are style some lineup changes coming on the back end with Isaak Phillips coming in for Louis Crevier, who is sore after taking a puck to the mouth on Tuesday. Goalie Arvid Söderblom gets the start in net.
