Senators lose a first round pick for nothing at all.

The Ottawa Senators have lost one of their first round picks, and received nothing in return.

The Ottawa Senators are about to have some unhappy fans due to their asset management.

According to a report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, the Ottawa Senators have lost former first round draft pick Lassi Thomson after he was claimed on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks. The Senators placed Thomson on waivers Saturday, risking losing him to a rival NHL team for nothing, and unfortunately for the Sens their risk has not paid off.

Thomson was drafted in the first round (19th overall) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft by the Senators themselves but he would only go on to play in a total of 18 NHL games for the franchise. Last season Thomson appeared in just 2 NHL games, spending nearly his entire season with the Sens' American Hockey League affiliate, the Belleville Senators, where he had 7 goals and 26 assists for a total of 33 points over 56 AHL games.

It is clear based on their decision to waive him this weekend that the Senators were prepared to lose the young defenseman, but it is also not hard to think of a better use for a first round pick than giving it away for nothing in return.
