Earlier this week, it was reported that the Melnyk family had been exploring the possibility of selling the Ottawa Senators.

On Friday morning, the team officially announced that they are up for sale.

"The board of directors of Senators Sports & Entertainment announced today that a process has been initiated for the sale of the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club. Galatioto Sports Partners, an industry-leading firm in the sports finance and advisory business, has been retained as its financial advisor."

However, there is one very important condition to the sale. The Senators must remain in Ottawa.

Earlier on Wednesday, Toronto-based brothers Jeffrey and Michael Kimel “expressed an interest” in buying the team if and when it goes up for sale. On top of that, Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds has been brought up as a very interested party in getting involved in the a potential purchase for the club.

However, it was mentioned by a source close to Reynolds that the movie star was looking at this possibility because he strongly believes the Senators should stay put in Ottawa, fearing that a sale to another bidder could result in relocation.

But now, this won’t be a problem, seeing that this is the main condition to accept a sale.

Maybe this means Reynolds won’t get involved… who knows.

The Senators are currently owned by Anna and Olivia Melnyk, daughters of former long-time owner Eugene Melnyk who passed away in March of 2022. The Melnyk daughters have done an admirable job of guiding the team in the months since their father’s passing.
