Sean Monahan was traded to the Canadiens this offseason (along with a conditional 2025 first-round draft pick) in exchange for future considerations, and with the passionate fanbase in Montreal, his fake Twitter account gained a lot of followers.
He then had to come forward on who is behind this account that has cat-fished many and especially made fun of the forward himself. In a video posted on Canadiens’ social media, Monahan revealed that one of his former teammates runs his parody Twitter account, @boringmonahan.
“I’m pretty sure a guy who I played with my first year started that. This guy, Chris Butler,” Monahan says in the video. “No, I know, because it was stuff that was happening on the plane and things that no one else would know.”
The fake account that mocks Monahan with some personal anecdotes and Monahan’s monotone voice and dry personality was launched in October 2013 and remains active to this day. It has generated 54,000 followers in its near decade of action.
Butler and Monahan played 75 games together, all of which were in the 2013-14 season, the latter’s first in Calgary.
The Twitter account often posts jokes about Monahan eating toast, which the Habs played up in their video as well.
