Sean Monahan gutted as he moved to Columbus to play with close friend Johnny Gaudreau

This is gut-wrenching.

The news is just heartbreaking and devastating for the Gaudreau family as it was confirmed earlier today that Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew, a former professional player, both tragically died in a horrific incident. The Gaudreaus were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bikes in Salem County, New Jersey, police said. Both brothers died from their injuries.

Since then, the hockey world has taken to the public forum to show support and remember the former players from Boston College.

We are devastated for everyone that loved Johnny Gaudreau, and that includes close friend Sean Monahan, who signed a five-year contract with an average annual value of $5.5 million earlier this season. When he inked his new deal, Monahan has explained how he was looking forward to reunite with Gaudreau.

Gaudreau played alongside Monahan for nine seasons with the Flames, and had signed with the Blue Jackets as an unrestricted free agent in July 2022. The pair combined for at least 55 points apiece in each of their first five seasons together.

“I am really looking forward to being teammates with Johnny again,” had said Monahan at the time of his signing. “Johnny is motivated to have a big season and be a huge part of the team and I’m excited to have the opportunity to reignite the chemistry we had for close to a decade.

“He is an amazing teammate, person and friend. I’m looking forward to these next five years.”

Just a few days ago, Monahan had reiterated his excitement to reunite with Johnny Hockey.

This is just heartbreaking all around.

I can’t imagine what Monahan, and loved ones of both Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau are going through at this time.

Gaudreau is survived by his wife, Meredith, his two young children, Noa and Johnny, as well has his parents, Guy and Jane, and sisters Kristen and Katie.
