Sean Couturier backs up his coach, John Tortorella.

The National Hockey League was the site of a little bit of controversy on Saturday night after Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella had a rather public spat with veteran NHL official Wes McCauley.

There has been some indication that Tortorella could face discipline for his behavior on Saturday night but, although there has been no official announcement from the NHL, it seems very clear that the Flyers are very much behind their head coach.

Following the conclusion of the game, Flyers captain Sean Couturier expressed his confusion at the decision from McCauley to eject Tortorella.

"I don’t know if he really deserved to get kicked out, honestly, after what he said, he didn’t say much," admitted Couturier after the game.

To make matters even worse, it was a special night for the Flyers head coach. The Tampa Bay Lightning were honoring their Stanley Cup winning team from 2004 on the night, a team that was led by a young head coach named John Tortorella, and I have little doubt that being there on that night likely meant a great deal to him.

Brad Shaw, who took over head coaching duties after Tortorella was ejected by McCauley, also expressed his support for Tortorella following the game.

"I think he was just trying to make the point we might not be getting a fair shake,"said Shaw. "It's an emotional game at times. It's part of the game."

The Flyers appear to be firmly behind their head coach.
