Scott Arniel addresses concerns around Connor Hellebuyck.
The head coach of the Winnipeg Jets addresses the elephant in the room.
The Winnipeg Jets entered the opening round of their Stanley Cup playoff series with a ton of questions surrounding goaltender Connor Hellebuyck's ability to perform in the playoffs, and after 4 games those questions are now louder than ever.
Through 4 games in the Stanley Cup playoffs Hellebuyck has recorded a 4.24 goals against average and a .817 save percentage, and on Sunday the St. Louis Blues managed to mount a comeback after going down early in Game 4, beating the Jets by a score of 5-1 and tying the series at 2-2
Following the conclusion of the game Jets head coach Scott Arniel was asked about whether or not his confidence in Hellebuyck had been shaken.
"I'm 100% confident in Connor Hellebuyck," said Arniel.
Arniel made a bizarre choice of words when explaining why he remained confident in Hellebuyck given his history of struggles in the playoffs.
"His resume speaks for itself," added Arniel.
Arniel also deflected some of the blame off of his goaltender, suggesting that the team was at fault for many of the goals that had gone into the Jets net on Sunday.
"At the end of the day we need to be better in front of him," said Arniel. "We need to let him see some pucks, there was a couple there he didn't get to see."
Arniel did however acknowledge that Hellebuyck himself has to be better moving forward, while also stating that Hellebuyck himself knows that.
"He knows he has to do things to help us," admitted Arniel.
There is, understandably, a ton of concern around Hellebuyck and his ability to deliver in the playoffs, and that will no doubt continue to be a major story in this series.
