Something brewing in Toronto?

People talk in Toronto, and when it comes to their Maple Leafs, they talk even more and this chatter has turned into rumblings of an actual significant trade in the works by general manager Brad Treliving.

It’s been said many times, by actual insiders, that the Maple Leafs are working the phones to improve their roster by the March 8 trade deadline. Some speculation surrounding Flames defenseman Chris Tanev has been mentioned several times, though insider Pierre LeBrun explained on Insider Trading last night that the cost to pry the blue liner out of Calgary might be too expensive for Treliving.

“The price right now from Calgary – our understanding is – a second-round pick, plus another asset, which could be okay for some teams. But a team like the Toronto Maple Leafs, which continues to have interest in Chris Tanev, doesn’t have a second-round pick for the next three years. So, it’s been made fairly clear to [the Maple Leafs] from Calgary, I believe, that the price is a first-round pick if they want Chris Tanev. I’m not sure whether or not Brad Treliving of the Leafs is [willing] to pay that or not.”

Rumours are rumours and the Maple Leafs may end up making a big move in the coming weeks or even days. We’ve seen the Vancouver Canucks pulling a monster trade last week when they acquired Elias Lindholm from the Flames, and the Winnipeg Jets followed suit when they traded for Sean Monahan of the Montreal Canadiens. This is the time of year where contenders are active on the trade market and look to make the best moves possible for a long run into the postseason.

The Maple Leafs need to cash in on this time with their star players like Auston Matthews and William Nylander playing extremely well, though a need for stronger defense and or an upgrade in net looks necessary to compete in the playoffs.

In my mind, there is no doubt that a trade of some sort is coming shortly to Toronto. The question is what will Treliving get and especially what will he give up to make this roster unbeatable in the postseason?
